A survey was taken for over 6,000 iPhone 4S users in the first three months of its release, which showed that one third of the users are coming from another mobile platform..

As reported by AppleInsider:
CIRP previously found that 18 percent of iPhone buyers at the iPhone 4S launch were switching from other platforms, like Android, BlackBerry or Palm. But that number only grew as 2011 drew to a close, with 36 percent of buyers coming from competing platforms.

Moreover, the iPhone made users switch their carrier from one which doesn't offer the iPhone such as the T-mobile, to another carrier offering it such as AT&T, Verizon and Sprint..
