The iOS 5.1 beta did reveal how the coming generations of iPhone and iPad will be supporting the quad-core chips!

As you can see above, the difference is in the "core.1" and "core.3" where:

The dual-core A5 chip, on the bottom, has the “core.1,” and the quad-core chip, on top, supporting iOS 5.1 beta is marked with the “core.3.”
As you can see above, the difference is in the "core.1" and "core.3" where:
- core.0 represents a single core processor
- core.1 represents a dual-core processor
- core.2 represents a triple-core processor (not in iOS code)
- core.3 represents a most probably a quad-core chip
